Oral Hygiene

Our practice philosophy is that gums are the foundation which support your teeth. If the foundations are weak then the high quality dentistry will not last as long as it should. Therefore, before we carry out any work, we try to ensure that any gum disease is brought under control.

Gum disease (periodontitis) is the main reason for tooth loss in adults and is caused by a build up of bacteria which live in the plaque and calculus (tartar) on your teeth.

We diagnose periodontitis by inspecting the soft gum tissues around the teeth with a pendant probe and use radiographs to determine the amount of bone loss around the teeth. Treatment depends on how severe the problem is and ranges from a simple scale and polish to non-surgical root planing.

During treatment we will show you how to look after your teeth to ensure that the gum disease is kept under control.
